Study Abroad Opportunities

College is the time to explore yourself and the world around you. Given that, what better what to do that than in another country? Studying abroad is a great chance to throw yourself in an unfamiliar environment, learn how you adapt to new situations, and immerse yourself in a new culture! Most schools offer some sort of study abroad program. However, some schools definitely put more weight on it than others. Let’s dig in to some of the best study abroad opportunities colleges can offer.

Maybe you’re someone who just might want to study abroad. Maybe you’re someone who already knows they definitely want to! Either way, here’s a list of the best schools to study abroad at (in no particular order):

1. Goucher College

Baltimore, MA

A small liberal arts school, Goucher College believes studying abroad is so essential to a student’s experience that they require all their students to study abroad at least once. With around 60 programs in 32 different countries, you can intern, volunteer or study for either 3 weeks, a semester, a summer or a whole year at your choice country.

2. University of Washington

Seattle, WA

Whether it’s for language, career or academic development, UW has up to 500 different programs in 72 different countries — an incredibly diverse number. Many of their programs are also faculty-led, and so the curriculum as well is usually designed by a UW faculty member.

3. Georgetown University

Washington D.C.

With 120 programs in 40 different countries, it’s no surprise that 57% of Georgetown’s undergraduates study abroad at least once. Beyond that, Georgetown even three satellite campuses in three countries: Alanya, Turkey, Fiesole, Italy and Doha, Qatar! There, Georgetown students can take regular DC classes taught by visiting faculty in a new cultural environment.

4. Dartmouth College

Hanover, NH

Firstly, Dartmouth is a classically worldly campus. Over 50% of this Ivy school’s undergraduates study aboard, and for good reason. As a smaller Ivy, all of Dartmouth’s study abroad programs are faculty-led. As a result, you can study and earn Dartmouth credit at one of their partnered schools in Milan, participate  in a fellowship in Africa, or do an internship in China. In other words, the possibilities are endless!

5. Duke University

Durham, NC

Duke takes pride in its Global Education for their students. Whether for a semester or a whole summer, students can participate in Duke-In programs, where Duke faculty are directly involved as students learn at partnered institutions. Rome, India, South Africa or Singapore — it’s all there!

6. University of Delaware

Newark, DE

Launching the first study abroad program in America in 1923, UDel Study Abroad recently celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2013. The Institution for Global Studies coordinates about 100 short-term, faculty-led programs a year! UDel offers summer, spring, fall and winter sessions for all students interested in study abroad, ensuring many opportunities for their students to learn in another country.

Happy traveling!

We hope this information has sparked your interest into the study abroad opportunities that can await you in college. The world, as they say, is your oyster.
