Located in the capital of the US, Georgetown boasts well-recognized academic programs in foreign service, political science, and government. It has graduated many politicians, judges, and ambassadors, including former President Bill Clinton. For those interested in learning at a political powerhouse of a school, Georgetown might belong on your college list. In this article, we’ll provide the inside scoop on the Georgetown essays to help make your application shine.

With an admittance rate of 16.4 percent in 2016, Georgetown is competitive to get in. The school maintains that class rank and test results of students not admitted are frequently as high or higher than those of students who are offered a place in the class. So what determines else admittance?

Extracurricular achievements and personal strengths are also important to Georgetown. The essay questions in the application provide the opportunity for students to highlight these aspects.

Below is some advice on how to respond to the Georgetown essays.

In the space available, discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved.

Keep it simple. Choose a major activity and write about it. Keep it to one paragraph and focus on what it is, how long you have done it, why it is important to you, and what it means to you. The last two elements of this response are the most important and usually neglected. They just want to know which of the activities in your activity list is the most important to you if you had to choose one.

As Georgetown is a diverse community, the Admissions Committee would like to know more about you in your own words. Please submit a brief essay, either personal or creative, which you feel best describes you.

They actually mean it – do not stress too much about personality or creativity. Instead, focus on using evidence to support your answers. For tips on how to improve your personal writing, be sure to grab your copy of our interactive guide to essay writing here.

APPLICANTS TO GEORGETOWN COLLEGE:

Please relate your interest in studying at Georgetown University to your goals. How do these thoughts relate to your chosen course of study? (If you are applying to major in the FLL or in a Science, please specifically address those interests.)

This is a mixture of the “Why Us” essay along with telling about your academic interests. We normally have a 5 paragraph structure with one body paragraph on the academic interests and two on “why Georgetown” in particular.

APPLICANTS TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING & HEALTH STUDIES:

Describe the factors that have influenced your interest in studying health care. Please specifically address your intended major (Health Care Management & Policy, Human Science, International Health, or Nursing).

Again, this is a pre-professional prompt that is focused on why health care specifically – should be supported by facts. This may be the most popular prompt to answer, so talking about school clubs/general experiences is not enough. Instead, focus on what it means to you and how it will affect your future.

APPLICANTS TO THE WALSH SCHOOL OF FOREIGN SERVICE:

Briefly discuss a current global issue, indicating why you consider it important and what you suggest should be done to deal with it.

In addition to discussing foreign policy, strong essays in this category focus on why it is important to the student. Ultimately, this is an introspective essay that does not need as much factual evidence about the global current issue as how we view that issue and think about it as a student.

APPLICANTS TO THE MCDONOUGH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS:

The McDonough School of Business is a national and global leader in providing graduates with essential ethical, analytical, financial and global perspectives. Please discuss your motivations for studying business at Georgetown. (Approximately 1 page)

Students applying to business should be sure that they want to pursue this field in the future. For Georgetown, being pre-professional is important – so demonstrating why business is critical.
