Do It Right The First Time

The time has come: you’ve signed up for college admission counseling, narrowed down which colleges you are interested in, and you’re ready to start applying. Whether you are applying to a school with rolling admission or an Ivy League, surrounding yourself with the best resources can make a big difference.

Having someone who knows the college application process, like high school counselors or one-on-one college counseling, can help make this process much smoother. Here are some tips to consider when applying to colleges.

Tip 1: Rely on college admission counseling.

While it may be tempting to skip this part, college admission counseling is crucial for a successful application process. Our qualified college counselors will provide you with everything you need to be successful when applying. A college counselor can be a lifesaver when it comes to acing the college application process.

Tip 2: Know the admission requirements.

These can typically be found on the admission page and will give you important information, like average GPA and SAT/ACT scores. You should also research if they require any additional materials like essays, recommendation letters, or interviews. Knowing this information in advance can help you ensure that you meet the requirements.

Tip 3: Write down all deadlines.

Colleges have different due dates, so it’s crucial to write down all deadlines. Some colleges offer early action, where you submit your application early, and they give you a faster decision. Always keep track of your deadlines to avoid missing one.

Tip 4: Prepare your application materials in advance.

Try to request any necessary documents with enough time. For example, if the college requires your SAT/ACT scores or your high school transcripts, start this process as early as possible. Let your teachers or mentors know ahead of time that you need a letter of recommendation. Always plan ahead.

Tip 5: Spend time on your application essays.

Application essays can help you stand out from other applicants and give you an edge. Start your essays early to ensure you have enough time to proofread your essays several times and let someone else proofread them. Our college counselors are trained experts on application essays and can help perfect your essay.

Tip 6: Meet with your high school counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate.

Every school has requirements to graduate on time, and you never want to be blindsided because you’re missing one class. There’s no harm in scheduling a meeting with your school to make sure you graduate on time.

Tip 7: Proofread.

Little details matter, so make sure everything is accurate to avoid slowing down the application process or negatively impacting your admission decision. Have someone else proofread your materials as well; they might catch an error you overlooked. Our counselors are there for you every step of the way to proofread and edit your materials to prepare you for success.

Tip 8:   Confirm that your application materials are received.

You can confirm this by calling the admission office and making sure they have all of your materials. After all, you don’t want to be denied because something got lost!

Tip 9: Prepare for any outstanding admission requests, like interviews.

Interviews help the school see if you are a good fit for their program and give you the chance to get to know the school’s administration. At Empowerly, we have former application reviewers to help you master the interview process.

Tip 10: Research scholarship opportunities.

College can be costly, so stay on the lookout for scholarships. There are plenty of sites and databases to find scholarships that can help pay for tuition, books, housing, and fees.

The college admission process can feel like a whirlpool of things being thrown at you, but remember to stay calm. Know that it will be okay.

There are people trained to help you throughout this process, like our qualified college counselors at Empowerly. That way, you can focus on getting ready for the next stage of your life!
