Is Business School Right for You?

Business School?

Business school, sometimes called “b-school” or “biz school,” is a popular option for many students. If you can’t wait to begin collaborating with your peers on a great start-up idea, seriously consider this option! The tools you learn in these programs will give you a launching pad to dive in. So, if the process of managing a team and running a business appeals to you, then this could be just the ticket. Without further ado, let’s get down to business!

What do they teach you in business school?

Business school teaches the fundamentals of establishing and running a successful business. This includes topics like:

  • accounting,
  • administration,
  • business analytics,
  • strategy,
  • economics,
  • entrepreneurship,
  • finance,
  • human resource management,
  • management science,
  • management information systems,
  • international business,
  • logistics,
  • marketing,
  • organizational psychology,
  • organizational behavior,
  • public relations,
  • research methods,
  • real estate…

and more! While that might sound like a lot right now, each topic adds a new layer to your skill set. In fact, you can even decide whether you want a specialized degree or a generalized one to better fit your goals. We recommend investigating the subjects and courses offered at the specific schools you consider applying to, when that time comes, for the most specificity.

What degree do you earn in business school?

Business school is a graduate program where students earn their Masters in Business Administration (MBA). There are other degrees you can earn in a business school, but on the whole, an MBA is definitely the most common. Some other potential degrees include: a doctorate in business (PhD); a Master’s in Finance (MS in Finance); or on the undergraduate level, a Bachelor’s degree with a major in business subjects (BA or BS).

How long is business school?

Attending a full-time business school program usually requires 2 years of attendance to earn a degree. However, since many attendees are working professionals looking to advance or develop their career, full-time is not the only option. Some choose to work through the curriculum at a faster pace, with an accelerated program lasting 12-18 months. Others want to continue their primary profession, and choose a part-time program, which can take 3 years or more to complete.

Why is an MBA so expensive?

Often, when you attend a great business school, you’ll have the chance to learn from accomplished professionals. In a hands-on learning environment, you can even advise or consult real businesses on how to improve. The networking and mentorship opportunities alone often make the difference between a moderately expensive and high-end expensive business school experience.

Additionally, since business tends to be a lucrative career, most attendees view the up-front costs of tuition as an investment in their future.

Is it worth going to business school, or is it a waste of time?

Ultimately, this question is up to you! We at Empowerly encourage all students to follow their dreams and pursue the opportunities that will get them there. However, if you choose to skim your way through classes and don’t make the most of your time, you won’t get much out of the experience. Feel free to reach out and book a consultation with our team if you’d like to discuss whether a business school is right for you and your goals.

How much is an MBA’s starting salary?

According to US News, the predicted starting salary for MBA graduates is nearly $88,000 for 2021! While this obviously depends on the job offers accepted (and the individual student), that comfortable starting salary is a compelling reason to consider business.

Bonus: How can I start learning about business in high school?

Understandably, you might want to learn more about the field of business before making the commitment. While graduate school may seem like a long way off, starting early will help you. As they say, the early bird gets the worm!

Yes, there are ways to see if business and entrepreneurship fit your interests now. Check out this article that explains a few top programs designed for high schoolers interested in business.  Additionally, you can review this round-up of programs targeted at high school students with an idea for a business and want to get started. The sooner you learn whether business school is right for you, the sooner you can start working towards it!
