Johns Hopkins University Essay

This past year, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) had one supplemental essay question. Since this school is highly competitive, it would be wise to make your writing supplement extra special! But how can you do that? Don’t worry, Empowerly has experience working with (and counselors who attended) this top-tier university. Drawing on our expertise and experience, here’s our guide on how to successfully address the prompt for this important Johns Hopkins essay. You can do it!

Of course, if you’re still struggling to improve your writing, it makes sense to practice first. If so, check out the exercises and tips in our Essay guide for inspiration. When you’re ready, we can move on to drafting your actual application essays together! Empowerly is always ready to help.

Prompt for the Johns Hopkins University essay:

Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 on a spirit of exploration and discovery. As a result, students can pursue a multi-dimensional undergraduate experience both in and outside of the classroom.
Given the opportunities at Hopkins, please discuss your current interests (academic, extracurricular, personal passions, summer experiences, etc.) and how you will build upon them here.

(300-500 Word limit)

Similarly to Cornell, John Hopkins is interested in your plan for all that the university has to offer. As a result, this essay is an opportunity to support your academic goals with school-specific resources. To write a successful Johns Hopkins essay, you must first research specific academic programs, professors, courses, clubs, and traditions.

Next, be sure to connect the skills or lessons you hope will supplement your goals for the future. Use your past experiences or activities as a launching point, but these should not be the focus. Use this opportunity to highlight your strengths and why the college should accept you.

Good luck!
