In high school, many students feel like exams and test scores rule their world. Teachers will tell you how your scores indicate how much you’ve learned in a class. The big aptitude tests like the ACT or SAT feel like a determiner of your intelligence. With so much focus on these exams, it can feel like the right score will determine your whole future. Given all that pressure stacked on, it’s no wonder they are also a major source of stress and anxiety! While it’s true that exams and tests are important, there are also some very manageable steps you can take to prepare. First, how do I know which exams and tests to take?
No matter where your starting point is, this guide will explain what you need to know. There are a few different types of tests to remember. Once you know what different kinds of tests are out there, you’ll be better prepared to make sure you’re on track with other high school students.
You’ll also need to know when to take them! A calendar is a great idea. Building a strategy is the first step to knowing what you need to do. With that information in hand, you’ll be ready to start the real work: studying.

What score should I aim for?
There is no pass or fail for the SAT/ACT, but you should aim to achieve a better than the national median score. Before you decide on the score you want to achieve you should first look at the colleges you plan to apply to and aim to achieve at least the median score for the target schools on your list.

How can I prepare?

- Time
- Give yourself ample time to get to the testing place. You should show up at least 5 minutes before the test will start.
- Materials
- Bring more than one pen and pencil and any other material (calculator with extra batteries) you are allowed to have.
- Make sure you have a watch so you can pace yourself.
- Starting places
- When you first receive your test, skim through the entire test so that you know how much time you expect to work on each section.
- Start with the easiest problems first. If you get stuck, skip over it and return to it once you have finished.
