When you apply to Princeton, you’re applying to the best.
2. It Has an Iconic and Historic Campus
Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, the school was renamed Princeton University in 1896 when the campus moved to its present day location.
Princeton University is old – that much you knew. But did you know that it’s the fourth oldest university in the U.S. and is one of nine so-called “colonial colleges,” which were all chartered prior to the American Revolution? This place has some serious history.
Today, Princeton University is spread over a suburban campus setting of approximately 600 acres. Many of the buildings are of great historical significance. For example, the Historic Society of Princeton, which catalogs the most important historical buildings in the city of Princeton, list’s the University’s Nassau Hall among its top sites.
Completed in 1756, Nassau Hall housed what was then the entirety of the College of New Jersey. It was the first capitol building for the state of New Jersey (starting in 1776), and a reading of the Declaration of Independence even took place in front of the building. Today, it’s one of many iconic buildings on Princeton’s campus, and holds numerous administrative offices, including that of the university’s president.
There’s also Cleveland Tower, which stands at the main entrance to the Graduate College at Princeton. Built as a memorial to President Grover Cleveland, it dates to the opening of the Graduate College in 1913.
Then, there are the countless landmarks that dot the Princeton campus, including statues, a sundial, cannons, and even a lake.

3. Honoring Long-Standing Traditions
Given all that history, it should come as no surprise that Princeton University honors many long-standing campus traditions. After 277 years, some traditions have come and gone (Nude Olympics, anyone?), but others have remained. In fact, you could say that traditions are one of the top Princeton specialties.
Current traditions include the bonfire and Cane Spree. Let’s start with the bonfire, which has been a Princeton tradition since the 1800s. It started as a way to celebrate Princeton victories in collegiate baseball, but is currently only seen when the Princeton football team has a better end-of-season record than the Harvard and Yale teams.
The most recent bonfire took place in 2021, in front of Nassau Hall. Students construct the Princeton bonfire with a collection of wood, effigies, and other items, turning it into a towering structure. Seeing a Princeton bonfire in person is a unique experience that bonds together generations of Princeton students.
The Cane Spree is a slightly more controlled tradition, although it didn’t start out that way. Based on riots between freshmen and sophomores in the 1860s, today’s Cane Spree is an intramural event that takes place in October and features freshmen and sophomore competitions in relay races, obstacle courses, and other events.
