HISTORY
The William and Mary College is a public research institution located in Williamsburg, Virginia, in the Southeastern United States. The university was founded back in 1693, making it the second oldest higher education institute in the country. It was established during the combined colonial reign of William III and his wife Mary II as an institution to colonize young Native American men with European values and education. The school was inaugurated on the 8th of February, 1693, and was named after the reigning king and queen. Although the university is second to Harvard University on the list of oldest colleges in the United States, the William and Mary College has the oldest college building in the country.
The college was initially intended to be established earlier in the 16th century at Henrico, but the plans faced setbacks. Notably, the ongoing genocide of Native Americans and a change in government in the years 1622 and 1624. However, construction for the college kicked off nonetheless, and the resulting building is called the Sir Christopher Wren Building in the Middle Plantation, Virginia. The college gained a seat in the House of Burgesses in 1693, and it was proposed to be funded by the export duties of animal furs and taxes acquired from tobacco sales in the country.
Today, William and Mary thrive as one of the eight ivy universities in the United States, building on its 300 years of experience to offer world-class excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. The college covers a total land area of 1,200 acres in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was named one of the most beautiful campuses in the country by Travel + Leisure in 2011. The university is governed and overseen by a 17-person board of visitors appointed by the governor of Virginia. The university is ranked 38th on the list of national universities in the 2022 edition for best colleges. It is also ranked the 16th best college for veterans and the 9th best undergraduate teaching institution. The college is nicknamed the “alma mater of the nation” because it has graduated several prominent names and national heroes. Most notable among these names are Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler, all past presidents of the United States.
