HISTORY
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, sometimes called UNC or simply North Carolina, was founded in 1789 by Revolutionary War military officer and future governor of North Carolina, William Richardson Davie. Apart from being one of the United States’ oldest public universities, the school was the first public higher education institution in N.C. and the flagship campus of the UNC system. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill opened its doors to 41 students in 1795, though enrollment quickly doubled. By the early 19th century, the university adopted a classical curriculum and opened a Department of Chemistry in 1818. Nevertheless, in 1871, UNC closed its doors during the chaotic Reconstruction era following the Civil War due to a lack of state financial support and other problems.
Thanks to the leadership of university president Kemp Plummer Battle, himself an alumnus, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reopened in 1875, beginning a period of restructuring and expansion for North Carolina. The changes included establishing a teacher training program that became an essential part of UNC offerings. The law school was opened in 1894, followed three years later by admitting UNC’s first female students to postgraduate courses in 1897. By the end of the century, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had not only just awarded 31 master’s degrees and seven doctoral degrees, but it also awarded its first female graduate her master’s degree. Throughout the 19th century, North Carolina continued to thrive and win a leadership position in education, law, and medicine that UNC is recognized for.
Today, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is ranked #5 in Public Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. The school has a total undergraduate enrollment of 19,117 and a graduate enrollment of 10,984. With an acceptance rate of 24%, UNC is most selective. UNC students (or Tar Heels) always remark, “It’s a great day to be a Tar Heel.” It’s with good reason since the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students make a difference daily, whether in academics, athletics, or extracurricular activities. North Carolina affiliates proudly boast 9 Nobel Prize laureates, 23 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 51 Rhodes Scholars. Well-known Tar Heel alumni include James K. Polk, the 11th United States president, actor Andy Griffith, and basketball legend Michael Jordan.
