HISTORY
The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, more commonly called Michigan or U of M, was founded in 1817 as a Catholic preparatory school in Detroit named the Catholepistemiad, thanks to the formation of the Michigan Territory in 1805. Its first incarnation wasn’t a traditional university but was organized as a streamlined network of schools, libraries, and other cultural institutions. Although the school was renamed the more straightforward University of Michigan in 1821 by Michigan Governor Lewis Cass, its setup changed in 1837 after Michigan entered the Union. The University of Michigan was vastly restructured as a higher education institution and relocated to its present site in Ann Arbor.
The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor is the first university to pursue professional education in the West. It established a medical school in 1850, engineering courses in 1854, and a law school in 1859. Additionally, in 1856, it was the first university in the United States to build a chemical laboratory and operate a chemical laboratory exclusively for instruction in chemistry. While enrollment grew by 1866, U of M first admitted women in 1870. Michigan steadily evolved into one of its most prominent universities throughout its early history, competing with the Ivy Leagues like Harvard University and Columbia University. By the turn of the century, the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor was, in fact, the second-largest university in the country after Harvard and nicknamed “Harvard of the West.”
Today, The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor is ranked #23 in National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 31,329 and graduate enrollment of 16,824. With its 26.1% admission rate, the school is most selective. First-year students at U of M can look ahead to the iconic campus’ dynamic academic, extracurricular, and social life that offers something unique every day. Michigan excels across multiple disciplines with 250-degree programs. The Wolverines compete in Division I of the NCAA and has one of the greatest football rivalries with Ohio State. U of M’s notable alumni includes World Wide Web co-developer Robert Cailliau, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller, and 38th President of the United States Gerald Ford.
