HISTORY
The University of Illinois, also known as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (or UIUC), was founded as a public land-grant research university. The school was established in 1867 as a flagship institution of the University of Illinois system. UIUC is located within the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana, hence the name, though it was first known as Illinois Industrial University between 1867 and 1885. The school also has an academic affiliation with AAU, URA, See-grant, and space-grant organizations.
The UIUC was among the 37 universities formed by the first Morrill Land-grant Act to provide public land for creating agricultural and industrial universities across the United States. In 1867, one of the selected sites for the new school was Urbana. The university opened for the first time on the 2nd March 1866, with 77 students and two faculty members. UIUC established and opened its library in 1868, containing just 1,039 volumes. However, since then, UIUC’s university library has become one of the world’s largest public academic library collections—particularly following the transformation into a research library in 1912. To reflect its agricultural, mechanical, and liberal arts curriculum, the school changed its name from “Illinois Industrial University” to “ The University of Illinois” in 1885.
The University Of Illinois was not exempt from the economic depression suffered by the country and other existing universities following World War II. The events which followed in the post-WWII era helped the school experience immense growth in enrollment, leading to the replacement of the University’s original hall with the Gregory Hall and Illini Union. Some decades past, the University of Illinois system included the main campus with Champaign and Urbana. In addition, the school added two Chicago campuses, namely, the University of Illinois Chicago Center (UICC) and the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC). As time passed, the Main campus was referred to as Urbana-Champaign or Champaign-Urbana campus. The university name was later changed from “the University of Illinois” to “University of Illinois Urbana Champaign” in 1977.
Today, the UIUC boasts 16 schools and colleges offering over 150 undergraduate and 100 graduate programs of study with 651 buildings. The school has graduated many famous names, including 30 Nobel Laureates, 27 Prize Pulitzer winners, 2 Tiring Award winners, and a Field Medalist.
