HISTORY
The University of Georgia (UGA), also called “Georgia” in the context of colleges, was founded in 1785 as the flagship of the University of Georgia system. UGA is a public land-grant research university classifying a public institution offering an Ivy League academic experience. The school has an academic affiliation with SURA, GRA, Sea-grant, Space-grant, and CRAU organizations and is also classified as one of the oldest universities in the United States. The university has a main campus located in Athens, Georgia’s two small Tifton and Griffin campuses, and two satellite campuses in Lawrenceville and Atlanta.
The idea of a University in Georgia was birthed in 1784 by a group of Yale University graduates consisting of three medical doctors and Lyman Hall. But, the school’s establishment is credited to Abraham Baldwin, who wrote the charter for the University of Georgia. The college was only paper-existent for 16 years, but at the turn of the new century, about 633 acres were acquired for the commencement of the University in real life. The University of Georgia was forced to close down during the Civil War in America and reopened in 1866 with an enrollment of 60 students. The post-war era saw the university experience many challenges due to economic depression. But, the University started a growing movement that has since adopted a host of graduate and undergraduate programs.
The school now has a main campus and various smaller satellite campuses worldwide. The school is associated with a house of reputable alumni and has graduated a host of distinguished alumni. The list of graduated alumni ranges from Senate members in the U.S and other countries to other prominent signatories and Rhodes Scholars worldwide.
