HISTORY
The University Of California, Irvine, is one of the ten campuses of the University Of California. It is a public land-grant university established in 1965 under the California master plan for Higher Education to accommodate the growing enrollments across the UC system.
In the 1950s, the University of California identified the need for new campuses to handle the increase in enrollment from the post-war baby boom. In 1959, they identified a suitable site in the Los Angeles area for one of the new campuses. Acquired from the Irvine company for one dollar at the time, the selected location was the Irvine City Ranch, an area of agricultural land bisecting Orange County. On June 20th, 1964, the University of California, Irvine was dedicated before a crowd of 15,000 people; the U.S. President, Lyndon B. Johnson, conducted the ceremony. On October 4, 1965, with 1,589 students, 241 staff members, 43 teaching assistants, and 119 faculty, the campus became operational, even though many of the campus buildings were at 75% completion.
The city of Irvine gained recognition; in fact, it became incorporated and established in 1971 and 1975, respectively, after completing the Irvine UC campus. For a good reason, too; this campus is the second-largest employer in Orange County, boasting an annual economic impact of $5 billion. UCI has been ranked ninth among the nation’s public universities and 36th on the 2021 list of Best Colleges in the U.S for the seventh year running. It is also rated the 15th Best college for veterans in the country and ranked second in the subcategory for social mobility for the second consecutive year.
The University of California, Irvine, has a total undergraduate enrollment of 29,301 students and a graduate enrollment of 6,000 students. It is a highly selective school, with an acceptance rate of 26.6%. The accepted students are guaranteed the best academic and social life both on and off-campus. There have been seven Nobel prize laureates and seven Pulitzer prize winners in UCI’s history, including three faculty members and four alumni. The UCI athletic team is the UC Irvine Anteaters, who have won 28 national championships in nine different team sports. The Anteaters compete in the NCAA Division I as the Big West Conference members.
