HISTORY
The State University of New York at Buffalo, popularly called the University at Buffalo (UB) or SUNY-Buffalo, was founded in 1846 as “the University of Buffalo,” a private medical school to train doctors to serve the surrounding communities that included Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and other villages. Future U.S. President Millard Fillmore, one of the principal founders, also served as the school’s first chancellor. The University of Buffalo opened its doors in 1847 after becoming associated with a hospital for teaching medical treatments. Because the university didn’t initially have its own facilities, its early classes were originally taught at an old post office in Buffalo. After its first building was finally established between 1849-50, the school’s medical programs continuously expanded, including a School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and by 1887, the University of Buffalo’s law school opened.
In 1909, the University at Buffalo purchased the Erie County Almshouse grounds, the location that would become the university’s first campus. As a result, the school gained more space in 1915 and established a department of liberal arts and sciences at the University of Buffalo the following year. The University of Buffalo would remain a private institution until 1962 when it was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) system and renamed the State University of New York at Buffalo (although it continued to be called the University at Buffalo). As part of its acquisition, the State University of New York on Buffalo’s campus was significantly expanded into Amherst, a town northeast of Buffalo.
Today, the University at Buffalo, SUNY is ranked #93 National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 22,306 and a graduate enrollment of 10,041. The school is considered more selective, with a 55.9% enrollment rate. Offering 300+ degree programs, UB boasts a world-renowned faculty, a global perspective, and an environment that inspires success, whether it’s academic, athletic, or overall excellence. The university’s sports teams, the Buffalo Bulls, compete in Division I (Division I FBS of the NCAA in football) and are the only SUNY school to field a Division I FBS football team, the highest level of college football. Notable alumni of the University at Buffalo, SUNY include Emmy-winning American journalist Wolf Blitzer, CEO of Paramount Pictures Brad Grey, and NASA astronauts Gregory Jarvis and Ellen S. Baker.
