HISTORY
The University of Texas at Austin is a public flagship research institution founded in 1883 in Austin, Texas, and it is often shortened to “UT Austin.” The first suggestion for a university in Texas traces back to 1827, when Texas was still land owned by Mexico. The state constitution of 1827 had included introducing a university there, but the Mexican government could not implement this plan before 1836, when Texas gained its independence from Mexico. In 1839, the Texas government reached an agreement to designate over 280,000 acres of land to establish a university in the state, which involved 50 acres from Austin, Texas. But no action was taken to further the cause, even after the adjoining of Texas with the United States in 1845.
Years later, the Texas state’s seventh legislature approved the establishment of the University of Texas, and $100,000 was finally budgeted to construct the state’s first public institution. But further actions toward establishing the university were delayed due to the American Civil War between 1861 to 1865. After several constitutional amendments, deliberations, and delays over the years, the legislature finally set out a structure and an organization for the university on March 30th, 1881. An election was organized to determine the university’s location on September 6th, 1881, and Austin was selected.
Today, the university comprises over 50,000 students in its graduate and undergraduate programs, with an endowment of $30.1 billion and an annual budget of over $3 billion. Seven museums and seventeen libraries have been built in the school, and it is now a major center for academic research with over $600 million worth of research expenditure. UT Austin takes pride in affiliation with 13 Nobel-prize winners. At the same time, several other internationally-recognized individuals and groups are alumni that made their way through the ranks of this prestigious institution. The university is also affiliated with 155 Olympic medalists and three Primetime Emmy Award winners. The University of Texas at Austin campus has an urban setting that covers 431 acres, and the institution’s motto translates to “Education is the guardian of the state.”
