HISTORY
Rutgers University is known officially as the State University of New Jersey. It was established by the Ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church as they sought autonomy from the ecclesiastical affairs of the other American colonies. The college was established, receiving its charter from New Jersey’s last Royal Governor, on the 10th of November 1766— initially naming itself “Queens College” after Queen Charlotte. The school was established alongside a college grammar school to educate youths in divinity, language, and other useful liberal arts and sciences. It also intended to train ministers for the Dutch Reformed Church.
In 1771, the school commenced its first class in a tavern called a sign of the Red Lion, with a lone teacher and a handful of students—who graduated and received their first degree in 1774, establishing the school as the second-oldest university in New Jersey after Princeton University. The school faced financial difficulties that forced it to close for some periods. Its trustees considered merging the school with the College of New Jersey, Princeton, but this did not happen due to members’ lack of joint agreement. In 1808, though, the school reopened after raising $12,000. This money was used to erect the college’s first building in New Brunswick. Unfortunately, the school was forced to close again following the economic depression that resulted from the War of 1812.
In 1825, the school reopened and was renamed Rutgers College in honor of Colonel Rutgers, a war hero. He later donated gifts to the college two years after they renamed the school, and these gifts put the school in good financial standing. In 1864, the school became a land-grant research college resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers scientific school, which expanded to become the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. It later grew to produce the school’s engineering college in 1914 and the college of Agriculture in 1921. In 1924, following the institution’s massive expansion into several schools, the collection of all the schools and colleges was classified as Rutgers University. The school became a state university by the acts of the New Jersey State Legislature and has since experienced immense growth.
