HISTORY
Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana, is the flagship campus of the Purdue University System. The university first came into being in 1865, when the Indiana General Assembly voted to take advantage of the Morrill Land Grant Act. The institution aimed to focus on agriculture and engineering, and the community began contributing funds to establish the institution. Lafayette’s business leader and philanthropist John Purdue and the Tippecanoe country offered $150,000 and 100 acres of land as contributions.
On 6 May 1969, the university was established in Tippecanoe county and named after the principal benefactor as Purdue University. On September 16th, 1874, the school opened with 39 students and six instructors at the newly completed campus of five buildings. The school opened as a male-only school until it accepted female students in 1875, making it a coeducational institution. It also issued its first Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry that same year. While in its early years, Purdue University wished to be distinguished from other classical universities and be identified as an industrial college, providing students with a liberal education that emphasizes science, technology, and agriculture. By the end of the 19th century, the institution had established agriculture, engineering, and pharmacy schools. These schools contributed actively to the community, like the school of agriculture sharing research results with farmers in the state.
A campus-building program commenced at the school that lasted for several years during the early 20th century. This program received various donations and helped establish the Purdue Research Foundation. During World War II, the school also contributed by conducting military research and training. During World War II, the school discovered element properties that it used to create the first transistors. After the war, the school commenced a decade-long construction program focused on science and research. This led to the school being made a member of the Association of American Universities and establishing the United States’ first computer science department.
Purdue University has grown to attain a reputable status as a public land-grant research university and has graduated notable and influential names in business, politics, media, and science. It also has graduated Nobel Prize Laureates, Tuning Award Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and Olympic Medalists.
