HISTORY
North Carolina State University, abbreviated to NCSU or NC State, was founded in 1887 by the North Carolina General Assembly as the “North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.” It was the state’s first land grant college established in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a mission to offer both practical and theoretical instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts (engineering) while also requiring a basic liberal arts education. NC State opened its doors later in 1889 with a faculty of five under the guidance of university president Alexander Quarles Holladay. By 1894, the school’s growth allowed for the addition of a military science department that became essential to NCSU’s curriculum afterward. In 1917, the university changed its name to “North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering,” which is now more popularly shortened to “North Carolina State.”
After World War II, NC State experienced extensive development thanks to the G.I. Bill, enabling thousands of veterans to attend college. As a result, enrollment grew to over 5,000 by 1947. In response to this growth, North Carolina State University designed new academic programs such as the School of Architecture and Landscape Design in 1947, the School of Education in 1948, and the School of Forestry in 1950. North Carolina State University experienced possibly its greatest growth from 1959 to 1975 under Chancellor John Tyler Caldwell, with the addition of a school of liberal arts offering many courses in humanities and the social sciences in 1963. By 1975, NC State had 12,800 undergraduates and 2,600 graduate students.
Today, North Carolina State University is ranked #79 among National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 26,931 and a graduate enrollment of 10,157. With its 46% enrollment, NC State is highly selective. As the largest four-year college in the state, North Carolina State University offers the best of both worlds with academics and extracurricular activities. While the school is part of the University of North Carolina system, it has carved out its identity through its renowned agriculture, engineering, textiles, and design programs. Additionally, its athletic team, The Wolfpack, competes in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference.
