HISTORY
Michigan State University, also known as Michigan State or simply MSU, is located in East Lansing, Michigan. The state legislature originally chartered the university in 1855 as the “Agricultural College of the State of Michigan” and opened shortly in 1857 as the first agricultural college in the United States. Both the Michigan State Agricultural Society and the state’s leading agricultural periodical, The Michigan Farmer, popularly supported the school. As an archetype for future land-grant colleges, the school’s mission was to prove the virtues and benefits of an agricultural college for the state’s farmers and economy. Its first-class graduated in 1861 before the American Civil War, and that same year, the college adopted a 4-year curriculum and granted master’s degrees.
Due to its transition into a co-educational university in 1870, the school began to expand its curriculum beyond its original focus on agricultural and mechanical arts. It now started to offer a wide range of coursework, beginning with home economics for female students. In 1887, it also offered degrees in engineering and other applied sciences to its students; and by 1899, the school admitted its first Black students. However, its largest expansion occurred after World War II, thanks to the G.I. Bill; by then, the college had become one of the U.S.’s largest higher education institutions. Michigan officially made the college a university in 1955 and adopted its current name, Michigan State University, in 1964.
Today, Michigan State University is ranked #83 among National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 39,021 and a graduate enrollment of 10,822. Michigan State admission is somewhat selective, with a 71.1% acceptance rate. For over 165 years, MSU has pushed the boundaries of discovery to make a better world and is dedicated to providing students with well-rounded experiences that will quickly lead to life-changing opportunities. As a Spartan at Michigan State University, students from all walks of life take pride in all their accomplishments, whether it be with academics, athletics, or extracurricular activities. Additionally, with more than a dozen related colleges, Michigan State offers comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. Its notable alumni include educator William Chandler Bagley, football player Herb Adderley, basketball player Magic Johnson, and author Richard Ford.
