HISTORY
Loyola Marymount University, also known as LMU, has been in existence for 156 years now. The school was established with an assignment to Jesuits and is located in Los Angeles, California, on the west side of the city near Playa Vista. It is home to six undergraduate colleges, offering 60 majors and 55 minors for undergraduate programs. It additionally has a graduate division that offers 51 master’s degree programs and 12 credential programs.
The school did not always exist as Loyola Marymount University. It resulted from a merger between two colleges: the Loyola and Marymount colleges, founded in 1917 and 1933, respectively. Interestingly, Marymount was also the result of a merger formed from the Maryland school system founded in 1923. On the other hand, Loyola College is a product of St. Vincent’s College, founded in 1865. The school was built to educate the boys in Los Angeles and received accreditation from the state in 1869. Following a series of expansions in which the school switched campuses on three occasions, St. Vincent’s College experienced its most significant change in leadership when the Jesuits replaced the Vincentians in 1911.
The Jesuits, unwilling to accept the debt incurred by the previous leaders of St. Vincent’s College, founded a college in Los Angeles alongside Loyola High school in 1911. This allowed them to start fresh. They folded the students and faculty members of the St. Vincent’s college into the newly formed school, and it was renamed the Loyola College of Los Angeles in 1918. In 1920, the school began instructing graduates with the law school’s foundation, while undergraduate instruction was still restricted to male students. In 1928, the school relocated to a new site in Westchester, where it achieved university status in 1930 and was renamed the Loyola University of Los Angeles.
In search of a coeducational system, Loyola University unsuccessfully petitioned the Archbishop of Los Angeles, resulting in the affiliation with Marymount College at the Westchester campus in 1968. This affiliation prompted Marymount College to move its 4-year degree programs to the Westchester campus of Loyola University, where they shared facilities and existed as a coeducational institution. The school was officially merged in 1973, and its name changed to the Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles.
