STUDENT LIFE

Hanover, New Hampshire, is considered one of the “best college towns.” Dartmouth College and its 269-acre campus have become synonymous with the surrounding rural town of approximately 11,870. Much of student life centers around the 5-acre area called The Green, a plot of land leftover from the 18th century and is now serving as a multipurpose location for recreational activities. As a liberal arts institution, Dartmouth offers undergraduate arts and sciences, engineering programs, and graduate programs. The heart of athletic life is the Alumni Gymnasium, which offers multiple state-of-the-art facilities outside the classroom. Extracurricular activities include many student clubs and activities from literary to political causes to performing arts.
Housing
- 85% of students live on campus
- Guaranteed housing for freshmen
- Freshmen required to live on campus
Dartmouth College requires all first-year students to live in residence halls as part of their essential experience. The year-long FYRE program places first-year students in a community of buildings with other first-year classmates to ease them into the university with activities formulated to meet their particular concerns and demands. The school guarantees housing for students as well for the first two years. Other undergraduates are spread across six Houses, with greater recognition for the communities, not specific buildings. Over 90% of undergraduates choose to live and learn in residence halls and other university-affiliated housing. Undergraduate housing is considered the framework for student life at Dartmouth because it serves as the solid foundation for the tight-knit campus community and has been the cornerstone for lifetime friendships.
Life as a Student
Life as a Dartmouth College student is ranked 6th for happiest students and 3rd for overall quality of life by The Princeton Review. With a 6:1 student to faculty ratio, students can look forward to 63.4% of their classes having fewer than 20 students. Additionally, students have the flexibility of “The Dartmouth Plan,” which allows them to take off a summer term, study off-campus, or do outside internships, among other perks. Dartmouth College also encourages students to explore its vibrant campus life of more than 200 student organizations and the oldest traditions in the country. Student organizations include the nationally recognized Dartmouth Outing Club, the nation’s largest and oldest collegiate outdoors club; Big Green Bus, the campus’s most senior a cappella group; and The Dartmouth, self-described as “America’s Oldest College Newspaper, Founded 1799.” Discovering their passions inspires students to find their place in the greater campus community.

HISTORY
Dartmouth College was founded in 1796 by Yale graduate and Congregational minister Eleazar Wheelock. To transform his former missionary school into a mainstream college, it was relocated to Hanover, New Hampshire, where the school resides today. The school received a state charter that established it as one of the original nine pre-American Revolution colonial colleges and further became the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The school was named after one of its supporters, William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth. Dartmouth College was involved in a historical case in 1819 when the school tried to keep its college charter while the state wished to transform it into Dartmouth University. Fortunately, though, the college was able to keep its college status and name thanks to Dartmouth alumnus, Daniel Webster, winning the case.
Webster famously said of Dartmouth College: “It is, Sir, as I have said, a small college. And yet some love it.” However, the small college continued to expand and today is known as the nation’s oldest professional school of engineering, the first graduate school of management, and one of the nation’s top medical schools. It has even found its place on the national academic stage by the turn of the 20th century, thanks to its 9th President, William Jewett Tucker (1893–1909). Under his leadership, Dartmouth received substantial endowments it never had before. As a result, the campus undertook a sweeping renovation of its facilities with new structures to replace outdated buildings. Its faculty and student body tripled as Tucker’s modernization of Dartmouth College brought it national prominence.
Today, Dartmouth College is ranked #13 in National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. With a total undergraduate enrollment of 4,170, it maintains a highly selective 8% admissions rate. First-year students at Dartmouth will step into a grand tradition of academic and athletic excellence to develop the positive, well-rounded Dartmouth education the school promises. 20% of students participate in The Dartmouth College Big Green, the athletic team representing Dartmouth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Ivy League conference. The college proudly counts 3 Nobel Prize laureates, 14 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 79 Rhodes Scholars. Its distinguished alumni include CNN anchor Jake Tapper, Theodor Geisel (also known as Dr. Seuss), and Nelson A. Rockefeller, 41st Vice President of the United States.
