HISTORY
Binghamton University, SUNY, known officially as the State University of New York at Binghamton, was founded in 1946 as “Triple Cities College” to provide local veterans a place to pursue their higher education after returning from World War II. In the early 1940s, Thomas J. Watson, one of IBM’s founders, saw the great potential of the “Triple Cities” area and worked with its local leaders to build a two-year junior college operating as a satellite school of private Syracuse University. Binghamton University, SUNY opened the original school in Endicott, N.Y., on land donated by Watson. Four years later, the State University of New York (SUNY) fully incorporated Triple Cities College and renamed it Harpur College in honor of Binghamton Colonial teacher and pioneer Robert Harpur.
Only two liberal arts schools were part of the New York state system at the time, Harpur College in Binghamton and Champlain College in Plattsburgh. When the latter shut its doors in 1952, its students, faculty, and records were quietly integrated into Harpur. Anticipating future growth, in 1961, the college moved to Vestal, a town next to Binghamton that would remain its present-day location. Harpur College maintained a high level of excellence and non-stop growing enrollment, resulting in the college being selected as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system. By 1965, the school was officially the State University of New York at Binghamton (also shortened as Binghamton University or SUNY Binghamton) to reflect more clearly its status as an advanced degree-granting institution.
Today, Binghamton University, SUNY is ranked #83 in National Universities by U.S. News Best Colleges. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 14,333 and a graduate enrollment of 3,200. With a 39.8% acceptance rate, Binghamton University, SUNY is considered a more selective institution. Although it is a public research university, Binghamton University, SUNY is considered a “public Ivy”, providing academic, athletic, and extracurricular experience on par with an Ivy League university. The university’s Intercollegiate Athletics program team, The Binghamton Bearcats, is in the NCAA Division I league with eleven men’s and ten women’s NCAA-sanctioned sports. While Binghamton University, SUNY started as a small liberal arts college, it has continuously developed into the top research university it is today, thanks to its vastly expanded research activities and funding.
