HISTORY
Arizona State University, founded in 1885, is a public research university located in Tempe, Arizona. The university started as the Territorial Normal School due to the need to train teachers in Arizona, with its building only a small schoolhouse on a 20-acre plot of land. Classes began the following year in 1886 with 33 students and as the years progressed the school changed names a few times until it reached its final and current name, Arizona State University, in 1958.
The university was given its all-college student status in the early 1900s and the first dormitories were built in 1902. During the Great Depression, the college began to grow rapidly and doubled its enrollment, reaching over 1,000 students! As the college continued to expand, more buildings were constructed and the university began to offer graduate degrees in Education as well as non-teaching master’s degrees. By the 1960s, the university finally expanded to establish a number of non-education colleges and by 1969, the university had an enrollment of 23,000 students.
Today, Arizona State University is ranked #121 nationally by U.S. News Best Colleges and offers students the ability to study from over 800 undergraduate and graduate degrees, minors, and certificates. ASU has an 84.8% acceptance rate, making it not too competitive of a school to apply to. Students looking to study at Arizona State University should aim to earn a 3.54 average GPA and a 1245 average GPA to have the best chances at admission. Famous alumni of the university include television host Jimmy Kimmel, fashion designer Kate Spade, quarterback Danny White, and baseball player Barry Bonds.
