Essay Scoop: How to Answer University of Michigan Essays

The University of Michigan is a well-regarded research university located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It boasts that there are more than 1,000 undergraduate research opportunities on campus and that every five weeks a new company is launched based on U-M technologies.The University of Michigan places high value in enrolling students with a broad range of perspectives and experiences and the essay question component is an opportune time for applicants to demonstrate this.  The essay questions allow applicants to document their personal attributes whether that be their goals or philosophy; background or identity;  or contributions made to the community. Below is advice on how to respond to these questions.

If you could only do one of the activities you have listed in the Activities section of your Common Application, which one would you keep doing? Why? (Required for all applicants. Approximately 100 words)

The way you spend time says a lot about your interests and it provides insight into your priorities. Keep in mind that every essay reveals a different facet and together they combine to create a single picture. Mention an activity that speaks to the passion you hope to continue at University of Michigan and why you would do so.

Essay #1 (Required for all applicants. Approximately 250 words)

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

Your surroundings shape your perspective. What are the salient factors of a community that contribute to your identity –  how have you impacted this community and how this community changed you.

Essay #2 (Required for all applicants. 500 words maximum)

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?

This is a classic “Why Us” essay. We generally ask students to have one academic body paragraph (professors, courses, research), one student life and traditions paragraph, and one on anything else that stands out (location, friends, connections, other research opportunities). This is a logical and argument-based essay.
