The University of Virginia, also known as UVA, is a selective college with an acceptance rate of 21%. Located in beautiful Charlottesville, UVA is consistently ranked as one of the top public universities in America and is also considered one of the “Public Ivies.”

UVA Admission Help: What Is Virginia’s Acceptance Rate?
The Cavalier class of 2026 is hailed as the most diverse group in the school’s history. UVA received 50,962 applications for admission and accepted just 9,522 students, giving the school an overall acceptance rate of 19%. Of those who were accepted, 4,031 went on to enroll.
You should be aware that it is more difficult to gain entry to this prestigious university if you don’t live in Virginia. In-state residents made up 62.3% of the incoming class, while 37.7% were out-of-state residents.
However, when you know what the admissions committee is looking for in its future students, you can tailor your profile to compete with the best and boost your chances of admission success with UVA.
UVA Application Help: Who Gets into UVA?
The demographics of the current student body at UVA are diverse. If you want to know how to get accepted into UVA, keep in mind that the greatest number of students, geographically speaking, are from the state of Virginia (67% of all UVA students are Virginia residents).
Location does play a role in application decisions if you are not a Virginia resident. Among non-residents, the competition is most fierce for applicants who live in states with huge numbers of qualified applications coming in. These include states along the West Coast and the entire Northeast.
If you live in less populated areas like North Dakota or Wyoming, or if you hail from a Deep South state like Mississippi or Alabama, your location will more likely provide a boost to your chances of getting accepted.
Should You Apply for Early Decision at the University of Virginia?
UVA offers three application options: Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. Early Decision is excellent for students who are 100% sure they would attend UVA if given the chance. This is because Early Decision is binding.
Early Action is non-binding, so students who feel that their applications are strong without adding senior grades may want to consider either of these early options.
- The 2021 Early Decision acceptance rate was 32.3%
- The 2021 Early Action acceptance rate was 20%
- The 2021 acceptance rate for Regular Decision was 16.4%
As you can see, the acceptance rates for the two Early rounds are significantly higher than the overall rate of 19%. There is a clear advantage to applying for Early Decision or Early Action at the University of Virginia: the earlier you apply, the better your chances of being accepted.
What GPA, Class Rank, and Test Score Requirement Does UVA Have for Admission?
While UVA does not state required minimum GPAs, class ranks, or test scores, it does report the stats of the students who have already been accepted. These numbers will show you what you need to achieve to be a competitive applicant.
GPA
The University of Virginia does not have a strict cut-off number for GPA, but the average unweighted GPA for freshmen is 3.9.
The school’s median 50% GPA range is estimated to be 3.75–3.96 (unweighted). This means that 25% of accepted students had GPAs below that range, and half of them had GPAs above it. In addition, 91.2% of the incoming class had an unweighted GPA of 4.0.
UVA does not automatically refuse any applications for students having GPAs under a certain number — GPA is not standardized.
Class Rank
Class rank is one of the six factors UVA ranks as being “very important” in the admissions decision-making process. According to the latest data from the university, class rank breakdowns are as follows:
- 90% of accepted applicants graduated in the top 10% of high school class
- 97.8% graduated in the top 25% of their high school class
- 99% graduated in the top half of their high school class
- 0.82% were placed in the bottom 50% of their high school class
- 0.18% were in the bottom quarter of their high school class
As with GPA, class rank is very important, but it is not the only factor that significantly impacts your chances of being accepted to UVA. If your class rank isn’t as high as it should be, you’ll need a strong showing in other areas of your application to make up for that.
Standardized Test Scores
There is no minimum SAT or ACT score to be admitted to UVA. The mid-50% SAT score range for students is 690–750 on the reading and writing portion and 700–780 on the math portion. For students who took the ACT, the average 50% score range is 30–34.
Test score reporting is currently optional for students applying to the University of Virginia. While 42% of applicants for the class of 2026 chose not to submit ACT or SAT scores with their applications, only 26% of those students were invited to join the student body.
Therefore, it’s wise to take one of the standardized tests (or both) multiple times if you can. The university will superscore your results — taking the highest section scores from all of your sittings — and use those scores in their admission decisions. The SAT essays and the ACT writing section are no longer required.
UVA Admission Help: How Does UVA Rate Applicants?
The University of Virginia performs an in-depth review of every single application for admission it receives. In order to understand how to get into UVA, you need to remember the six factors the admission committee ranks as “very important” in its decisions:
- GPA
- Letters of recommendation
- Class rank
- Rigor of high school course load
- State residency
- Personal/character qualities
There are other factors that they consider to be “important” to the process. These are:
- Talent/ability
- Application essays
- Extracurricular activities
It’s important to note that the University of Virginia admissions committee reads a student’s entire application before rendering a decision.
UVA Application Help: What Extracurricular Activities Should You Do?
Admissions officers at UVA recommend thinking about your application as if it were a puzzle. Your transcript is the largest central piece of your puzzle, which is no surprise because it represents four years of academics. However, what you do outside the classroom also weighs heavily on your admission chances.
You may have a slight advantage if you are an athlete because the school takes great pride in its NCAA Division I teams — all 27! There are about 750 athletes attending UVA.
There are also hundreds of additional extracurricular endeavors that will help your application stand out on the activity front, so even if you aren’t an athlete, your extracurricular activities and interests really do matter.
Keep in mind that, like every other university, UVA seeks students who are leaders, so it would benefit your application to really highlight any clubs, groups, and organizations in which you played a leadership role. The number of organizations you were in doesn’t matter nearly as much as what your impact was during those activities.
Who Should Write Your Letters of Recommendation?
Your letters of recommendation should be written by teachers or faculty members who can testify to your intellectual curiosity, leadership abilities, and academic capabilities.
If you know what you will be majoring in or have a good idea of what your main field of study in college will be, it’s a good idea to ask a teacher in that same field to write your letter of recommendation.
How to Get into UVA: The Application Essays
Since the university does place so much significance on your essay answers, it’s paramount that you spend a good amount of effort and time on your application essays. The main Common App Essay is required by UVA, as are two shorter supplemental essays.
The following are some examples of previous essay questions and prompts. Notice that the different schools have different questions for applicants. You will be asked to answer one of the following questions in roughly 250 words:
Describe one of your quirks and why it’s part of who you are as a person.
What is your favorite word? Why is it your favorite?

The school is looking for passionate students to join the UVA community of artists, researchers, and scholars. The questions that must be answered for the separate schools are similar to those below and have a limit of 250 words max:
School of Architecture: Describe a profound experience that helped forge your interest in studying with the School of Architecture.
College of Arts and Sciences: What work of music, art, science, literature, mathematics, or other media unsettled, surprised, or inspired you, and how did it do so?
Kinesiology Program: Talk about experiences that interested you and led you to apply to the Kinesiology Program.
School of Nursing: Discuss a healthcare-related experience or a significant interaction that heightened your interest in studying nursing.
Engineering and Applied Sciences: Talk about a feat of engineering that serves the common good. What about it inspires you to study engineering?
Does UVA Require Alumni Interviews for Admission?
Many universities either require alumni interviews for applicants or make them available as an option. However, the University of Virginia does not offer interviews. The school does make it clear that prospective students are welcome to visit the campus for tours and information sessions.
Can You Get Credit for AP/IB Test Scores at UVA? What About Dual Enrollment Credit?
Yes, UVA generally gives college credit to students who take AP and IB exams and do well. On AP exams, students must receive scores of 4 or 5 to get credit. On IB exams, they must score 5, 6, or 7. Exceptions and further information can be found in the Undergraduate Record.
The University of Virginia also awards credit from various dual-credit courses taken during high school. These courses are typically college-level courses taken at a site other than a high school campus.
How Do You Apply to the University of Virginia?
The Early Decision deadline for admission is November 1, which is also the deadline for Early Action. The Regular Decision deadline is January 5.
