Bee Yourself!
Did you know that your social style (introvert or extrovert) can influence your learning? Participation points can be nearly impossible to quantify. Teachers each have their own metrics, and you don’t typically receive a rubric for how to demonstrate your engagement best over time. While each class will differ, knowing more about yourself as a student will help you succeed regardless. Introverts and extroverts both have unique qualities to bring to their learning environments—”you just have to play to your strengths!
So what’s the difference?
The personality types in question are broad sociological categories intended to sort people by their social interaction styles. It’s not an exact science, and plenty of people have a mix of qualities, so it’s sometimes hard to tell. Here is a quick definition of the three main terms we’re talking about:
- introvert = gains energy and inspiration from inward-focused activity,
- extrovert = gains energy and inspiration from outward-focused activity,
and - ambivert = a mix of both, depending on the setting and context.
And just to be clear, both introverts and extroverts can be friendly, outgoing individuals with great social skills! The difference is how you choose to recharge your batteries in your leisure time—”what inspires and refreshes you. In other words, where does your brain prefer to go when you have the choice?
That third case—”ambiverts—”are a split decision. They can recharge in different settings, depending on their mood, external factors, and variables. If this sounds like you, you may identify with qualities on both sides of the spectrum, which gives you a lot of flexibility.
