The University of Southern California (USC) has long been regarded as a prestigious university, attractive to academically successful students with high aspirations because of its reputation for delivering a world-class education through top-ranked programs.

The 9.2% USC acceptance rate for the Class of 2028 highlights the school’s commitment to remaining a highly selective university.

USC’s Admission Insights for Fall 2024

The admissions statistics for USC in the fall 2024 semester show the school’s desire to accept students who are equipped to take full advantage of its resources. With more than 82,000 applications this year, USC continues to place a high value on student profiles that display top-tier academics and passionate involvement in activities.

Taking a Closer Look at the School’s Admission Statistics

USC’s admission statistics for the Class of 2028 are as follows:

  • About 82,000 total applicants
  • Roughly 7,550 admitted students
  • 9.2% total USC acceptance rate

This year’s USC acceptance rate is .8% lower than last year’s 10% acceptance rate. Part of this is due to applications being at an all-time high, but it also speaks to the school’s staunch commitment to high standards for accepted applicants.

The University of Southern California has a policy of looking holistically at applications and considering personal qualities alongside academic achievement. This policy emphasizes the university’s stance on wanting students who will contribute to the already strong fabric of the school’s community.

Geographic Admissions Trends and Detailed Insights on Selectivity

Undoubtedly, admissions have become more selective with each passing year. In 2020, the USC acceptance rate was just under 16%. That fell to 12% in 2021 before hovering between 9 and 10% for the last two years.

In-State vs. Out-of-State Students

USC has yet to publish geographic and demographic data for the Class of 2028. However, around 38% of USC first-year students from the previous year’s class came from within California. This is typical for the school and represents a healthy balance of in-state and out-of-state students in stark contrast to University of California schools, where more than three-fourths of students are usually from inside the state.

Last year, USC also had an exceptional showing from international applicants, who often make up around 17% of admits. International applicants have been up about 40% from 2019 and hail from a diverse range of countries, including China, India, Canada, the U.K., South Korea, and Singapore.

USC Admitted Student Profiles and Admissions Policies

The middle 50% GPA range for USC admits usually comes in at around 3.86–4.00 (unweighted on a 4.00 scale). 52% of admits from the Class of 2027 submitted a standardized test score. The middle 50% range for the SAT was 1460–1540 (super-scored), while the middle 50% range for the ACT was 33–35 (super-scored).

USC plans to remain test-optional through the fall, spring, and summer 2024 semesters, highlighting its commitment to a holistic admissions policy.

Demographic Trends in USC Admissions

USC remains committed to diversity in student admissions. 76% of the school’s Class of 2027 admits were international students and those from typically underrepresented backgrounds. 52% of admitted students identified as women, and 25% of admits to the class were first-generation college-goers.

Demystifying Admissions Criteria and Planning for Success

The USC admissions team uses a holistic review process that examines each student’s academic and personal achievements in the context of their personal narrative and background. In their review, they focus on high school performance, program rigor, writing skills, test scores, and capacity for leadership and community involvement.

Most USC students are in the top 10% of their class and have test scores in the top 5%. Students are expected to maintain a grade of C or better in three years of high school math, including Advanced Algebra (also known as Algebra II). The admissions team pays special attention to how you have prepared for your intended major.

The college uses essay and short-answer responses to understand your voice and personality. Required teacher and counselor recommendations provide a more robust picture of your academic success and contributions inside and outside of the classroom.

Ultimately, USC looks for students who are interested in the world, are lifelong learners, and seek to grow to their fullest potential. They want students who are determined to make a contribution to the classroom, the campus, and the world beyond their doors.

What Are My Chances of Getting Accepted to the University of Southern California?

Though no one can predict your specific chances, the USC acceptance rate is higher for those who are in the top 10% of their class, who have test scores in the top 5%, and who show interest in bettering the world around them.

What Does USC Look for in an Applicant?

The University of Southern California seeks applicants who have maintained high academic performance in a rigorous program while contributing to their communities.

How Can I Increase My Chances of Admission to USC?

A USC acceptance rate of just 9.2% suggests that the school has a highly competitive admissions landscape. Strategic planning and guidance from an experienced college admissions counselor are important. You also need to know the school’s history, what the admissions team looks for in an applicant, and how to align your application with the school’s values and expectations.
