HISTORY
Located in Rochester Hills, Michigan, the University of Rochester was founded in 1850 by the First Baptist Church of Hamilton. The church established what was then known as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, which was renamed the Hamilton Literary; and, later on, the Theological Institution. The Institution gave birth to the University of Rochester and Madison University, later renamed Colgate University. It aimed to train students who would go-ahead to become clergies after the Baptist tradition.
The University of Rochester started in 1850 with just 60 students taking classes in downtown Rochester. In 1851, a year after it was founded, the University of Rochester adopted its official motto “Meliora,” Latin for the phrase “ever better.” In 1900, the Institution became co-education, granting admissions to both males and females; Ella S. Wilcox was the first woman to receive a degree in 1901. Over the years, the University continued to broaden its scope and now offers a range of professional degree programs in major courses such as Engineering, Biological, and Biomedical Sciences, Education, Psychology, Professions, Related Programs, and Business for undergraduate, Masters, and Doctorate degrees.
Today, the University of Rochester is ranked #4 in Best Universities in New York, #5 in the Best Colleges for Nursing in America, #34 in Top 100 Universities in the United States, and #144 in Best Global Universities. As a very selective institution, it has an acceptance rate of 41.0%, with an undergraduate enrollment of 5,554 students and graduate enrollment of 1,313.
