HISTORY
The history of Denver, Colorado, and the University of Denver (UD) are intertwined, as both the city and institution have evolved together. As a city, Denver has always been known for its innovation and uniqueness, and the University of Denver has followed the same path. The university was established in 1864, six years after the city of Denver itself was founded, and is among. the oldest educational institutions in Colorado. Founded by Dr. John Evans, the university was first known as Colorado Seminary in its earliest days. As the city grew, though, so did the university. Denver was initially known for the gold rush boom, but the population soon skyrocketed as more people began to move and it began to transform into the city it is now. Similarly, the Colorado Seminary started to change, becoming an intellectual center of the town of Denver and establishing a global presence as it attracted more students.
The University of Denver is one of the city’s defining institutions and is a highly-ranked and renowned research university. The university has a strong focus on offering students a diverse curriculum and the opportunity to pursue their interests. It was one of the first universities in the country to establish a business school, offer social work opportunities, and build its presence in the athletics community. Additionally, the University of Denver was visited by Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s and became a center of protest and activism within the region.
The University of Denver has continually worked towards cementing its place in history by honoring its past while also trailblazing for the future. The campus has undergone extensive modernization over the years to fulfill students’ and academic faculty needs but continues to hold its global presence among institutions from all over the world.
