HISTORY
New York University is a university located in—you guessed it—New York, USA. It was founded in 1831 and is considered one of the oldest higher institutions in the country. It is also the largest private University in the nation, with academic research centers and facilities in over 25 countries globally. The University was initially known as the “University of the City of New York” before officially changing to “New York University” in 1896.’
NYU was founded by a group of prominent New Yorkers, including Secretary Albert Gallatin. He believed it would be an institution for students ready to devote themselves to literary and scientific pursuits. Albert Gallatin’s wish was to create a non-denominational institution for students irrespective of their beliefs, cultural background, religion, or social upbringing. Geared up with a futuristic outlook, the founders began in October 1832 teaching contemporary subjects like Chemistry, Painting, and English in rented rooms near downtown City Hall. Three years later, the University was moved to its present location in Washington Square. The School of Medicine, School of Law, College of Dentistry, Graduate School of Art and Science, and other schools and colleges were later added. The School of Law, a half-century later, became famous for being one of the first law schools in the country to grant admission to women.
Today, New York University is ranked #30 in National Universities by the U.S. News Best Colleges and #29 in Best Global Universities. NYU is a highly selective university with an average acceptance rate of 16.20%, a total undergraduate enrollment of 26,981 students, and a graduate enrollment of 25,904. NYU student athletic teams compete in club, intramural, and varsity levels and are equally strong in academic excellence. Over the years, they have won championship awards in different sporting events like Fencing, basketball, cross-country, golf, and wrestling.
