This is your time to explore possible topics, reflect on meaningful moments, and find the personal stories that only you can tell. Don’t worry about word count or grammar just yet—this phase is all about discovering what you want to say.

Try these strategies:

• Freewriting for 15 minutes a day
• Reflecting on values and turning points
• Reading professional examples of creative nonfiction

Not sure where to begin with your writing? Here are a  few reflective prompts to help you brainstorm: 

• What’s a challenge you’ve overcome, and what did it teach you?
• When have you stepped outside your comfort zone?
• What’s a passion or curiosity that has shaped your goals?
• How has your family, culture, or community shaped your perspective?

Commit to finishing your first full draft by mid-July.
