Of the applicants for the Class of 2028, 60% attended public schools elsewhere in the nation, with more than 9,000 applying through nonprofit organizations like OppNet and the Charles Hayden Foundation.

More than 1,000 admits were offered NYU Promise, a program that provides free tuition for students from families with annual incomes under $100,000. Additionally, the school anticipates that 20% of the class will be first-generation college-goers and 20% will receive the Pell Grant, which is awarded to students with exceptional financial need.

Last year’s NYU class had 80% of its students coming from underrepresented backgrounds. Though this is somewhat atypical among colleges, it makes perfect sense for a university in a culturally diverse city like New York.

The overall NYU acceptance rate includes students who applied during two separate rounds: Early Decision (ED) and Regular Decision (RD). Over 22,000 of the school’s 118,000 total applications were reviewed during the ED round, which marks a 56% increase in ED applications over the last several years. 

Although the school has yet to publish academic profile breakdowns for the Class of 2028, it will likely be similar to that of last year’s class. Typically, admitted students rank in the top 10% of their class and achieve at least a 3.7 unweighted GPA. 

Additionally, the middle 50% of successful students scored between 1470 and 1570 on the SAT and between 33 and 35 on the ACT.

Students who wish to be successful in NYU admissions should first focus on demonstrating academic strength through a rigorous course load and a high GPA above 3.7. Standardized test scores are important, but less so than a student’s academic performance.

Students should also obtain excellent recommendations that speak to their character and personal qualities. The school values innovation, a global vision, and a commitment to service. Finally, students must write top-notch answers to the essay and short answer questions, as the admissions team considers these “very important” to the process.
