How to Get into Rice University

Sometimes called the “Harvard of Texas,” Rice University (founded in 1912) offers a robust curriculum for elite students who appreciate prestigious opportunities, Byzantine-style architecture, and an established, wise aesthetic. 

The 300-acre campus is situated in the museum district of Houston, just 30 minutes from several beaches. Rice University continuously ranks as one of the top schools in the nation.

The University is rich in tradition, and this includes its unique residential college system. Rice comprises eleven residential colleges, and each new undergrad is assigned to one of them. Each college has its own dining halls, shared spaces, dorms, and set of traditions and customs.

As a result, the campus provides more leadership opportunities than many others because each residential college also elects its own student government officials. These leaders arrange course opportunities, lecture series, social events, and service activities for fellow college residents.

Rice emphasizes service, research, and instruction in the classroom with a centered focus on contributing to the surrounding Houston communities. The school’s academic and social opportunities are considered first-class. Therefore, the competition for spots in every incoming freshman class is always fierce. 

Rice announced in March 2021 that it plans to gradually expand the size of its student body over the next handful of years; however, that doesn’t mean you won’t need Rice application help or that admissions criteria will be less stringent. 

Currently, the university has about 4,247 undergrad students and 4,038 graduate students. By autumn of 2025, it hopes to enroll about 4,800 undergraduates and 9,000 grad students.

Rice University’s acceptance rate stands at about 8.5%. For the incoming class of 2026, it received 31,424 applications and accepted only 2,691 of them. The college saw 1,210 matriculants in that class.

Rice does not release the average GPA of incoming classes. However, the admissions team does consider GPA to be a “very important” factor in the university’s admissions decisions. The university searches for students who demonstrate a strong sense of leadership and show solid academic prowess. 

The admissions committee at Rice also states that since the academic application has many areas of evaluation, they do not weigh any one part of it over others during the reviews for admission acceptance.

As for standardized test scores, Rice University students come in with SAT composite scores that average 1530. The 25th percentile sits at 1500 while the 75th percentile for SAT scores is 1560. For the ACT composite, the 25th percentile is 34 and the 75th percentile score is 35.

In contrast to many universities with a majority of students hailing from the colleges’ home states, only 37% of Rice students are Texas residents. Half of the students are from states other than Texas, and 13% are international students.

Furthermore, based on federal definitions, a majority of students are Asian American (35%) while 30% are caucasian, 17% are Latino or Hispanic, 10% are African American or Black, 6% are multiracial, and the remaining 3% are “other.”

There is no single “correct” path for students to take regarding academics in high school. However, Rice will tell you that students who take the most challenging courses available to them make the strongest applicants. 

If AP, IB, or honors courses are available at your school, you need to take them because Rice will look more favorably on a B in an AP class than an A in a typical class.

Specifically, Rice recommends taking the following:

• Mathematics: 3 credits
• Social Studies: 2 credits
• English: 4 credits
• Laboratory Science: 2 credits
• Foreign Language: 2 credits

Students should also earn three additional credits in any of those coursework categories. 

Make sure the credits you earn are related to the field you are interested in. For example, if you will be applying to the engineering or natural sciences schools, you should earn credits in classes like trigonometry, physics, precalculus, and chemistry.

The most recent undergraduate admissions requirements set by Rice University are:

• A completed Common Application
• The Common App Essay
• SAT subject test scores (optional)
• IB or AP test results (optional)
• Three letters of recommendation
• Admission interview (optional)
• High school transcript, midyear report, or school report

For the letters of recommendation, one must be from a counselor and two must be from teachers. One of the teachers should teach a subject related to your planned major. 

There are additional specific requirements for students who apply to certain schools. If you are interested in the Shepherd School of Music, you will need a performance recording or audition profile. If you plan on applying to the School of Architecture, you will be required to submit additional essays. 

For those who will be applying to the School of Humanities for a Visual and Dramatic Arts major, you will need to submit a portfolio via the Rice Admission Student Portal.

In addition to the Common Application, Rice University also accepts the Coalition Application.

Students are required to complete a Common Application personal statement as part of their Rice application. In addition, the university requires three supplemental essays and one image. Together, the essays and statements help the admissions team decide which students would contribute to the university in meaningful ways.

Display your knowledge about the university by including some facts that you won’t find in generic brochures. If you’ve visited campus, try to include something that was meaningful to you during that visit.

A third essay prompt given by Rice requests that applicants explain what life perspectives they would contribute to the Rice U. community (in 500 words or fewer). You could discuss how your unique gender, ethnic, socioeconomic, or racial identity could enhance life at Rice, or you could discuss life experiences that have given you a unique perspective. 

Rice University does take a look at the extracurricular activities of the students turning in applications; however, the university’s admissions committees aren’t looking to see who participated in more activities than anyone else, and they aren’t necessarily searching for students with a huge variety of activities under their belts.

What they are looking for are examples of leadership within your activities. In other words, the Rice admissions teams are less interested in the number of activities and more in the quality of your roles in them. Students should always aim to participate in extracurricular activities that accurately reflect their areas of interest without overextending themselves.

Students should also consider being active in organizations and activities outside of school and in their communities. The idea is to display a commitment to volunteerism that demonstrates the good nature of your character. 

If you want to know how to get into Rice University, remember that you must set yourself apart so that your application makes a lasting impression. Calling attention to your good character, spirit of community, and passion for helping others is an excellent way to do that.

When researching how to get accepted into Rice University, do not overlook the long-standing tradition of “The Box.” This is a section on the Rice application that asks you to share an image of something that is significant to you. This can be an image of anything you choose. Some examples:

• A family member
• Your favorite book
• A toy from your childhood
• A meaningful object
• A role model
• A favorite place

Your image has to be a two-dimensional image uploaded through the Coalition Application, the Common Application, or the Rice Admission Student Portal.

The image isn’t used for evaluative purposes; instead, it allows applicants to put their personal “stamp” on their applications. You should choose an image that doesn’t need an explanation and speaks for itself. It simply needs to represent something about who you are.

Although interviews are optional, Rice does recommend them for first-year applicants. They are not guaranteed but are an excellent way for you to relay your knowledge about Rice University. They are also an opportunity to showcase your achievements and your story in a personal way while you learn more about the campus.

Remember that no single section of the application is evaluated more heavily than any other. The university states that it does not single out any single academic metric either, such as GPA, class rank, or standardized test scores.

Rice University operates its admissions program with holistic evaluations and reviews to evaluate the entire breadth of your contributions, achievements, experiences, and interests.
