While support from advisors is great, the premed culture is intense. Not toxic but not exactly collaborative either.

Stanford is known for medicine, technology, and innovation. You’ll have access to Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care, and the school is located in Silicon Valley, which is a tech and biotech hub. 

Stanford also offers a unique research experience in that you’re not boxed into traditional premed paths. You can do basic science, but you can also do AI in healthcare and bioengineering.

That being said, if you want support, you need to take the initiative to get plugged in with the premed advising. If you don’t, it’s just expected you’ll carve your own path.

Premeds typically go to Columbia for location and affiliation. You’ll have access to:

• NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital
• Dozens of NYC hospitals and clinics

Plus, Columbia is a research powerhouse, and premeds can get involved in some pretty high-level work. But just like Harvard, every opening is slammed with competition, so you’ll be fighting for the opportunities you want.

Columbia also has a distinct curriculum in that you’ll take literature, philosophy, and writing-heavy courses, which can be helpful for your med school application, but also take away from your premed coursework. Plus, your GPA can take a hit here if you’re not careful. STEM classes are pretty rigorous, and curves can be tough. But the good thing is, premed advising here is organized and accessible, so if you need the help, it’s there.

The University of Pennsylvania offers access to one of the best medical ecosystems in the nation. You not only have the associated medical school, but you also have access to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).

And if you’re interested in research, UPenn offers integration across schools. That means you can combine medicine and business or medicine and public policy. And while it’s possible to maintain a strong GPA here, the classes are hard, and the curves are competitive.

Their pre-health advising is organized and can help with med school timelines and expectations. The premed community at UPenn isn’t as supportive, but it’s not toxic. The vibe is more “pre-professional” and focused.

At Yale, you’ll have top-tier access to clinical experiences, similar to Columbia or UPenn. But the difference is that it’s less crowded and less chaotic. But the biggest advantage is actually academic freedom. This college has a flexible curriculum, minimal rigid requirements, and even non-traditional grading during your first semester.

Because of this, Yale is one of the most GPA-friendly colleges that offers elite resources. You’ll also have research opportunities comparable to Harvard or Hopkins, but with less competition. Premed advising is supportive but not pushy. They’ll help with building your med school application, but they won’t micromanage you.

And as a bonus, the premed culture is collaborative, not cutthroat. Students here are smart and ambitious, but not hyper-competitive.

Duke University Hospital is literally one of the top hospitals in the country, so you’ll have amazing opportunities to get your clinical experiences. On top of that, Duke offers tons of funded undergrad research opportunities and dedicated pre-health advising.

And if you’re worried about getting slammed by hard classes, Duke is known to have manageable grading and strong academic support. This means it’ll be easier to maintain a strong GPA. 

Northwestern’s biggest advantage is its connection to the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Northwestern Memorial Hospital system. And on the academic side, it has quarters instead of semesters, so you’ll be able to take more classes and explore more interests. Just know this also means you’ll move through the material quickly.

This school is also considered a research powerhouse. The unique thing about it, though, is its interdisciplinary angle, like engineering and medicine or policy and healthcare. At Northwestern, you’ll also get support from a pre-health advising office that offers strategy, timeline planning, and even committee letters for when you apply. 

It’s known that it’s harder to maintain a strong GPA at the University of Chicago. Why? UChicago has intense classes with heavy writing, science courses that go deep, and if you plan on memorizing everything, the tests will catch you off guard.

But on the positive side, the curriculum prepares you to write and communicate better than at most schools. And while this seems like a skill you don’t need, it will actually help you when it comes time for writing your med school essays.

There are research and clinical opportunities here, too, but you’ll need more initiative. It’s not as centralized to the experience as at other schools. That’s even true about the pre-health advising. It’s premed specific, but there’s less hand-holding.

At Boston University, you’ll be dropped right in the middle of the following:

If you can capitalize on this network, then clinical and research opportunities are endless. That being said, you’ll need to keep a heavy focus on your academics. While it’s possible to maintain a good GPA here, you’ll need to stay disciplined through large science classes, weed-out culture, and high premed competition. You can get support from the pre-health advising office, but it’s based on your initiative. With so many premeds, they won’t be seeking you out to help.

Georgetown isn’t the first choice for most premeds, but it’s not as killer when it comes to maintaining a good GPA, and being in Washington D.C. gives access to policy and healthcare opportunities. This is also a go-to school if you’re passionate about service. Georgetown makes it easy for students to build a mission-driven narrative that many med schools want to see.

And compared to the pre-health advising of Boston or UChicago, Georgetown offers more personalized support. Beyond committee letters, you’ll get application guidance, which includes a timeline strategy. 

That being said, if you’re looking for a school with ample research opportunities, you may want to look elsewhere. You can still join labs and get experiences, but this school isn’t a powerhouse in this area. 

At UNC, you can get strong biology, chemistry, and public health programs, but without the GPA hit. You can expect more forgiving grading compared to some of the elite private schools we outlined above. It’s also really easy to get clinical experiences at this school because of its connection to the UNC Hospital, UNC Medical School, and other clinics and specialty centers.

And if you’re interested in public health, this is one of UNC’s biggest strengths. You can get experiences with global health, health policy, and so much more. Getting research here is also more attainable than at other schools because there’s less competition and more labs.

Pre-health advising is attainable, but don’t expect hand-holding. You need to seek out the support if you want it.

There’s no shortage of access to clinical experiences at the University of Washington. Just look at what you’ll have access to:

•  UW Medicine (top-tier academic system)
• Harborview Medical Center (major trauma + underserved care)
• Seattle Children’s Hospital
• Fred Hutch Cancer Center

Not to mention, UW is a research giant. As an undergraduate, you can get experiences in NIH-funded labs, translational research, and tech-health crossover work. And when it comes to public health, UW is one of the best in the world.

But, while the clinical exposure is top-notch, academics can be brutal. Expect large STEM classes and a weed-out culture. It’s not UChicago-level brutal, but a good GPA isn’t guaranteed.

If you’re looking for a strong premed school all-around, then the University of Michigan is a good choice. Here you’ll be plugged into hospitals, research institutes, and clinical programs from the start. Plus, this university has tons of labs and is often viewed as a research giant.

And unlike many other schools, the classes won’t kill you. STEM classes can still be large, but they’re not designed to crush your GPA or weed you out. Don’t expect personalized advising, though. While you can get pre-health specific support, you’re at a large public university, which means if you’re not advocating for yourself, you could get lost in the crowd.

Two words describe being a premed at UCLA: powerful but chaotic. You’ll have access to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and other LA hospitals. This access to clinical exposure is similar to that of Duke or Northwestern. This school is also a research powerhouse with a large number of labs to choose from.

That being said, competition is high. There’s a huge premed population here, which means large classes, brutal grade curves, and more fighting to get the opportunities you want. There’s real GPA pressure here, too, and premed advising is available but not personalized by default. 

At UVA, you can expect strong biology, neuroscience, and chemistry programs that impress med schools without the hit to your GPA. Plus, you’ll have many opportunities for clinical exposure at UVA Medical Center and UVA School of Medicine. Research is also accessible here due to a smaller premed population. That means less overcrowding every opportunity.

And one thing we haven’t come across yet in this list is a school where advising is its strength. At UVA, they offer structured, personalized support to keep you on track for med school admissions. And an added bonus: the culture is more collaborative than cutthroat. Students here are driven but not toxic.

Especially for in-state students, UT Austin is a great place to be a premed. Expect lower tuition and a strong preference for Texas residents. Academics here are pretty rigorous, but the good thing is it's not designed to destroy your GPA. Plus, research opportunities abound at this school, but you’ll still need to be proactive because competition here does exist.

One big thing to consider is that UT Austin doesn’t have a massive on-campus hospital system. Sure, you’ll have access to Dell Medical School (UT’s med school) and Austin-area hospitals and clinics, but you’ll need to be pretty intentional when seeking out opportunities. You can also expect a DIY type advising experience, similar to other public colleges.

Michigan State is often underestimated despite having connections to two medical schools. One is DO, and one is an MD, so you’ll have your pick of the exposure you’re looking for. But you won’t just get experiences at academic hospitals. There are also community clinics that serve underserved populations.

Classes at MSU are rigorous but not so competitive that you can’t maintain a good GPA. Plus, research is fairly accessible, which means you can get involved early. And like many large schools, the premed advising is what you make it. They won’t hold your hand, but the support is there if you pursue it. 

This is a fairly non-traditional option, but still a good path you can take as a premed. This school has a partnership with Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM), where you can get your clinical experiences. It’s not as crowded here as at UCLA or Michigan, so you can expect easy accessibility to opportunities.

VT is known for engineering, technology, and applied sciences, which means you can create a med school application that’s not cookie-cutter. On the other hand, don’t expect a research giant. There are growing opportunities, but it’s not yet a strength for the school. That being said, the opportunities that do exist, there’s not heavy competition for them.

Here, you can maintain a strong GPA despite rigorous classes, but premed advising is heavily self-driven.

Medical schools don’t actually care about the ranking of your undergraduate college. They care about your GPA, MCAT score, clinical experiences, and letters of recommendation. If you want stronger letters of recommendation, more accessible research opportunities, and academic support, then choose a college with a smaller class size.
