When people find out what I do for a living, their minds sometimes jump straight to mundane stuff. They think about me tracking application deadlines or proofreading an essay or two.

But I look at college counseling a bit differently. For me, it’s more college coaching.

Growing up, I played a lot of sports. When you’re into sports, you see kids with raw, just incredible talent.

But being able to take that talent and mold it, focusing it toward something — well, that’s where a coach comes in. You hire a tennis coach to help someone with raw talent compete at the highest level.

A college coach should do the exact same thing. They should develop a strategy to translate that raw talent into admissions outcomes.
